Discover the charm of the native Persimmon, Diospyros virginiana, with its striking presence in various landscapes. This resilient tree typically occurs in rocky or dry open woods, limestone glades, prairies, thickets and abandoned fields. It is one of the easiest trees to identify in winter because of its distinctive thick, dark gray bark that is broken into rectangular blocks. The ovate to elliptic leaves, 2-6 inches long, are glossy dark green above, and they transform into a brilliant display in the fall. This is a prized asset in permaculture landscapes.
